Redpoll (thru painting filter)

I read somewhere that there was an explosion in the Redpoll population...I believe it because our Maple tree at times has had dozens of Redpolls waiting for their turn at the feeder. These little guys will probably pretty soon make their way to the far northern part of Canada for the breeding season.

Backyard Junco

For the last couple of years Dark-eyed Juncos have been showing up in our backyard. I submitted this photo to Lake Superior Magazine and it took 2nd Place in the Nature category of their 26th annual photo contest in 2020

Big Bird...Little Cormorant

My...What big feet you have! Taken on Little Cormorant Lake in Western Minnesota. The breeze slowly pushed my kayak close enough to get a few good shots

The Leaning Goose

This was taken on the Wisconsin side of the St. Louis River near Mont Du Lac Ski Resort. It took me a while to figure out when this photo was level! Am I leaning or is the goose leaning? LOL

Let's Go Kids!

This photo was taken along the Elk River near Phillips, Wisconsin. It is formatted to 10 x 24 inches and can be printed that way, but for display I have also split this into 3 individual 8 x 10's and framed them.

Redpoll I

A common Redpoll just outside our kitchen window.

Shimmering

Taken on Bear Lake just north of County Highway H near Delta, Wisconsin. This duck (not sure what breed) must have felt that I was invading her nesting area and was trying to lead me to another area. She would quack a little and fly off and then come swimming back and quack some more.

Graffiti and the Geese

Taken by the Harvest State Co-op Elevator at the foot of the High Bridge in Superior, Wisconsin. The entire area is like an urban game refuge and when the geese flew by the old elevator I loved the way they looked against the graffiti.

Urban Game Refuge

This photo was taken underneath the Superior Wisconsin side of the High Bridge (Blatnik Bridge). That area is a veritable game refuge - thousands of ducks and geese make that entire area their home.

Mr. Drake

Our end of Lake Superior was pretty much frozen completely over. When I went hiking out by Brighton Beach I couldn't figure out where the ducks were landing...all I saw was ice! I investigated and found a small stream (unfrozen) that was packed with ducks!

Flying Dinosaurs!

A Great Blue Heron on Bear Lake (just southeast of Iron River, Wisconsin). He or she has a seaweed necklace from fishing! When they see a fish, they are quicker than quick to grab it with their long beak.

Redpoll and the Snow

Just outside of our kitchen window we have a bird feeder and then just beyond that a few feet is a small maple tree. I noticed this scene a couple of weeks ago when the wind was blowing the snow off the roof on a bitterly cold day. I opened the window, waited for the Redpolls to come back and took a few pictures.

Takeoff!

On the northwest bay of Lyman Lake, Wisconsin, I let the breeze slowly push me toward the swans on the far shore. When they finally decided to take off I was able to get a couple of shots. This photo was taken with an inexpensive Sony point & shoot superzoom

Young Cardinal

For a few weeks a young Cardinal was showing up at our feeder this winter...but alas, he or she must have found a mate as it has not been back to our feeder.

Red Finch

On a blustery November day just outside our kitchen window, this little finch sat stoically against the wind. They can live to be almost 12 years old! They are generally about 5.5 inches long and weigh less than an ounce.

Look Ma! No Hands!

A pelican flying over Chambers Grove Park in the Fon du Lac area of Duluth, MN. I was kayaking around the area, saw the pelican fly over and didn't I had gotten any sort of a decent shot, but this one turned out halfway ok. The focus point is right on the head with both wings a little out of focus

Urban Snowy Owl

My friend Joe emailed me that a snowy owl was sitting on his neighbor's roof. I grabbed my camera, drove to his place and took a few shots.
